Oh no, I just realised a flaw in my thinking.
I’m in favour of universal single-payer healthcare, with optional top-up insurance for those people who wish to have private rooms in hospitals etc. Pretty much what we have in Australia, I think is the right thing.
The problem is, we need food more than we need healthcare, and I don’t have a problem with the profit motive in the business of food production.
What am I thinking wrong here?
I think the anser is that food is predictable and relatively affordable. Routine healthcare is also affordable, but if you end up needing healthcare that goes beyond that, it can be crushingly unaffordable, even for the relatively affluent.
